Protect your data from being held hostage by ransomware. There’s a new ransomware threat making headlines, and its name is Petya. Similar to its recently, appropriately named predecessor, WannaCry, this outbreak spread quickly, attacking the networks of numerous companies across the United States and Europe. Why is this important to you? Here’s what you need to know.
Petya encrypts various files including the master boot file so the system becomes unusable after reboot, making businesses vulnerable to loss of invaluable data, time, and money.
HOW CAN YOU HELP PREVENT AN ATTACK?
- Stay up to date. Operating system, app, and security software updates provide patches which help contain the spread of ransomware or malware. If you don’t have security software installed, get a good program installed immediately.
- Click cautiously. Screen emails for questionable links and attachments, verify sources, and delete suspicious items.
- Backup of files. Perform complete backups of data to external drives, cloud services, or elsewhere. The backup can be used to restore the data of comprised systems.
